KAMPALA – Kawempe Home Care, a vital facility supporting children undergoing cancer treatment, appeals for £67,000 (270 million shillings) to secure a permanent home.
Executive Director Gereva Nuwagaba told PML Daily that the current rented premises, housing New Hope Children’s Hostel, are up for sale. “We’ve been renting since 2016, but now the landlord wants to sell. We have the first option to buy, and we urge well-wishers to support us.”
The hostel cares for over 30 children from across Uganda, providing palliative care services. “We realized that many of the children diagnosed with cancer, tend not to go far as far as the treatment is concerned due to several reasons like lack of funds to transport them from their homes to Mulago whenever they are needed to do so. We opened this home with specialized people offering palliative care services to children,” Nuwagaba added.
A teenage patient, who wished to remain anonymous, emphasized the hostel’s importance. “This place is my second home. I arrived with just one pair of clothes, but now I’ve learned phone repairing skills. Please support our director’s efforts.”
Kawempe Home Care has supported over 800 children since 2016, offering free accommodation and skills training However, COVID-19 has significantly reduced funding.
However, the organization has faced significant funding challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has reduced support from local and international sources.
Nuwagaba expressed optimism that the appeal would receive a positive response. “We believe that with the support of well-wishers, we can secure this vital facility for the children who need it most.”
