KAMPALA – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has categorically denied claims that Ms. Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha, who was recently filmed assaulting a traffic police officer, is the party’s Public Relations Officer (PRO). In a statement, the NRM clarified that Ms. Bashisha has never been a staff member at the NRM Secretariat and is unknown to them.
“We would like to clarify that Ms. Bashisha is neither a PRO nor a staff at the NRM Secretariat. As a matter of fact, she has never been a staff of the Secretariat and is unknown to us.”
The NRM condemned Ms. Bashisha’s actions, emphasizing that they do not tolerate such reckless behavior, especially against law enforcement officers on duty. The party expressed relief that the law is taking its course.
Following the incident, Ms. Bashisha was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer on duty, a crime punishable under Ugandan law. She appeared before the Nakawa Magistrates Court and was remanded to prison until November 4th.
The Uganda Police Force (UPF) has commended the public for their cooperation in bringing Ms. Bashisha to justice and has pledged to ensure that justice is served.
The NRM urged the public to disregard the false and misleading articles circulating about Ms. Bashisha’s alleged affiliation with the party. They also called on the media to verify information before publication to prevent spreading misinformation.
Furthermore, they noted that their legal team is working with the police to determine the motive behind this impersonation and will file a formal complaint accordingly.
