KAMPALA – The Uganda Police Force has intensified operations in the Karamoja and Sebei Sub-regions particularly Moroto and Napak due to the increasing crime in the region.

While addressing the media on the security concerns in the country, Director Operations AIGP Edward Ochom revealed that in Moroto within the town, some few thugs eight in number marauding around the town have been involved in not just the theft of cattle but breaking into houses of people.

He said police has deployed foot and motor vehicle patrols to curtail the ongoing instability in Karamoja region “We are intensifying foot and car patrol,”

“It is (Police patrol) already going on and we are already engaging leaders including people in government of Uganda to talk to these people. We are engaging all of them so that they talk to the people. We are also carrying out community policing,” he said.

Ochom further noted that they have also encouraged their officers to be alert because some of their (persons behind instability) targets are guns.

On his part, Chief Political Commissar Asan Kasingye revealed that community policing is already in place in Karamoja but they need to engage them so that they tell them who is doing this (perpetrators) and why.

He said through the engagement and sensitization exercise the root cause of insecurity in Karamoja region will be established.

According to Kasingye, instability in Karamoja has been found to have a close connection to that in Sebei region.

“Actually, some cattle were found in Sebei region that was stolen from the Karamoja area. This month officers from my directorate will be going to Sebei region and also Karamoja,” he said.
