MBARARA – President Museveni has warned his relatives seeking elective positions to avoid using his name for personal interests.
Quoting Jesus Christ in Matthew 12: 46-50; Mr Museveni said his brothers and mother were those who do the will of the people.
“On the issue of my relatives getting involved in politics. Read Matthew 12: 46-50. Jesus says His brothers and mother were those who do the will of His Father in Heaven. My name should not come up when my biological relatives are contesting. For me, like Jesus, my relatives are all and any NRM member who does the right thing according to the party constitution,” he said.
The President was addressing NRM parliamentary aspirants and other officials from the districts of Isingiro, Kiruhura and Kazo, Mbarara and Sembabule on Thursday, September 10, 2020.
His remarks come as his relative, Sodo Aine Kaguta, takes on Shatsi Musherure, who is Minister Sam Kuteesa’s daughter, in the battle for the NRM party flag for the Mawogola North MP seat.
The election was suspended following allegations that Aine and Musherure were abusing the process by using their military escorts to beat up rival supporters.
The President pledged to address the matter with the senior party leadership.
“However, I will table in the party CEC the issue of high-ranking party officials backing their relatives to fight other NRM contenders. That’s not leadership. You should not get involved in supporting your relative and disadvantaging other contenders,” he said.
