KAMPALA – Maj Gen (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu has lashed at government for the slow response to the fire that gutted Makerere University’s Main Building.

While visiting the scene of the incident on Monday, 21 September 2020, Gen Muntu, who is a presidential hopeful in the 2021 elections, said it is a shame that government does not prioritise buying of equipment to protect its citizens but also invests in tools that suppress them,

“Government invested in arming itself to the tooth when it comes to quelling legitimate opposition gatherings, but has never prioritised equipment to protect citizens and the economy from fires like these,” he said.

“This reveals an unfortunate reality: the regime is focused on its survival not the welfare of the state. This is not a political argument or attempt to score points. It is a fact. And unless Ugandans send a clear message that it is unacceptable, we will have more of the same,” he added.

Gen Muntu’s remarks come after another fire occurred at the same Main Building on Sunday evening even when as police had struggled to put out the earlier fire.

He urged the University Administration to quickly review the health and safety measures put in place across the entire campus.
