KAMPALA – Kawempe North MP Latif Ssebagala has stepped down from the Kampala Lord Mayoral race after being nominated on NUP ticket.

Ssebagala told journalists on Tuesday, 22 September 2020 that the decision has been made with the interests of the party and Opposition in general at heart.

“I have taken this decision in the best interest of the wider opposition and also given the fact that we have many conflicting interests as NUP …I apologise to all Ugandans and to all those who have put their trust in me,” he added.

Ssebagala’s withdrawal comes days after he was given the NUP flag over singer Jose Chameleone.

In the assessment records, Chameleone scored very poorly. For example NUP vetting committee noted that without his showbiz name, the singer was not recognisable by voters thus scoring 3 out of 10.

When it came to popularity on ground, the committee claimed that there was little voter confidence- Here he scored 4 out of 10.

The Kawempe North MP, however, said he will remain a member of NUP and will support Robert Kyagulanyi’s presidency in the 2021 elections.
