LIRA – Johana Omara Olweny, the Kole Resident District Commissioner, was on Thursday, August 13, 2020 remanded to Lira Government Prison for allegedly beating a man who later died.

The RDC and his guards also allegedly assaulted and robbed Okot Jonan, the youth councillor for Ojwina Division in Lira City.

Olweny appeared before Lira Magistrate’s Court after being accused of having a hand in the death of Opio Ronald, a resident of Kakoge B in Ojwina, Lira City West Division.

The magistrate read to him the charges and remanded him until August 27, 2020.

Opio was beaten by the RDC’s escorts together with the youth councillor to Ojwina Division, Jonan Okot. Opio unfortunately succumbed to the wounds on 10th August 2020.

Okot alleged that he was beaten together with the deceased.

He alleged that the RDC and other soldiers found him and the deceased walking along the road and started beating them.

“His (Opio’s) clothes were torn off and he was left on the road. Since that time, I haven’t recovered, I have chest pain,” Mr Okot said.

Mr Bonny Okoda, a sign language interpreter, said the security personnel should take into consideration the health status of persons they meet on the streets.

“We call upon the government to ensure that Opio gets justice. There are people with disabilities there in society,” he said.
