KAMPALA- Two Makerere University alumni have through their lawyers Birungi, Nalunkuma & Company Advocates petitioned the university against shortlisting Prof. William Bazeyo in the race for Deputy Vice Chancellor Finance and Administration job.

In June 2019, High Court Judge Musa Ssekaana threw out Prof. Bazeyo on grounds that he was illegally appointed for the same position.

In his ruling, Justice Ssekaana stated that the Search Committee took a decision and forwarded only one name to the University Senate for the sole purpose of endorsement and yet the University Senate is mandated under the law to take a decision without fettering their discretion in exercise of power conferred under the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act.

He further ordered for a fresh DVC F&A Search Process a post that was declared vacant.

Now the university shortlisted Prof. Anthony Mugisha, (School of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Resources), Prof. William Bazeyo, (Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor;Finance and Administration) and Assoc. Prof. Allan Mulengani Katwalo, (Dean, School of Business and Applied Technology (SOBAT), Clarke International University, Kampala Uganda) for the position of DVC F&A.

According to the lawyers, Prof. Bazeyo was erroneously shortlisted for the position as the vacancy advertisement indicated that the first requirement was that the applicant should have a PhD or an Academic Doctorate which he allegedly doesn’t have.

The NCHE has confirmed Prof. Bazeyo got his PhD from a non authentic university college in the USA (PHOTO/PMLDaily).

“Prof Bazeyo obtained his PhD from Atlantic International University which is not accredited by agencies recognized by the US Department of Education,” they said in their letter dated August 10.

The Acting Director Quality Assurance and Accreditation at the National Council for Higher Education confimed that Awards from Atlantic International University are not recognised by the institution according to documents seen by PML Daily.

“Therefore our clients have beyond reasonable doubt that Prof. Bazeyo has no authentic PhD,” the lawyers said.

They added that for the sake of the integrity of the search process, the image and reputation of Makerere University, they demand that Prof. Bazeyo be dropped from the list of candidates for the position of Deputy VC Finance and Administration.
