KAMPALA – Over 100 teachers and 100 professional boxers were on Tuesday, 18 August 2020 unveiled as members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party headed by presidential hopeful Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine.
The group leader, Dr Joel Mirembe, said they are joining the party to fight the injustice and impoverishment they have suffered under the ruling NRM party.
“We want to play a participatory role. Our fellow teachers are being held back in economic custody and we want to change that,” Dr. Mirembe said.
In his remarks, Bobi Wine urged the new party entrants not to be intimidated for their decision.
“We are delighted to receive a group of comrades who have been mobilising for NRM and President Museveni in Kampala. They indicated that they have been doing this in order to get money, but even then, the regime has used them time and time again and given them nothing in return. We welcomed them home and they have now embarked on the process of getting others on board,” he said.
Bobi Wine said the joining of the group indicates the character of the party.
“It was an absolute pleasure to receive these comrades who are part of my family. As a boxer myself, I was super happy to receive these friends most of whom I have known for several years. They are ready to join us as we struggle to redeem our country and improve sports of all kinds. If you want to understand the character of our revolution, look at the three categories we have received today. Victory is in sight,” he said.
