KAMPALA – 21 staff at the Ministry of Finance have tested positive for coronavirus, Permanent Secretary Keith Muhakanizi has confirmed.

According to Muhakanizi, the cases are a result of the massive screening of all staff of the Ministry between August 19 to 21 2020.

“All the affected staff are under medical care,” he said in a statement dated August 24.

“The process of tracing the contacts of the positive cases is in progress,” he added.

Muhakanizi has urged members of the public to avoid unwarranted visits to the Ministry of Finance.

He further urged all officers and staff who were absent on the day of screening to stay at home until they undertake the COVID-19 test.

The Finance ministry has now joined a long list of both government and private agencies that have reported infections in the recent weeks. Key among others OPM, KCCA, Toyota, Parliament of Uganda, Vision Group and others.

The Ministry of Health has announced 99 new coronavirus cases bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 2,362 as of August 24.
