KAMPALA – The government has warned that perpetrators of tribalism will be arrested.
Government spokesman Ofwono Opondo told journalists in Kampala on Monday that the promoters of tribal sentiments are not aware of what it can do to the country’s stability.
“This primitive talk of tribalism is being promoted by the opposition wanting to paint a bad picture about this government. We understand that we are in a political season but we shall not allow people to preach hate and discrimination on tribal lines. The long arm of the law shall squeeze those who think are big headed,” Mr Opondo said.
This comes days after police arrested four comedians who call themselves Bizonto (the deranged) for allegedly inciting tribalism.
However, the comedians say they intended to teach children, now stuck at home because schools are shut down, about the people who occupy strategic positions in the country.
They listed President Museveni, Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi, and Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the senior presidential advisor on special operations, among others.
But on Monday, the government spokesperson said that whoever will be caught preaching tribalism will be crushed. He adds the NRM is the most professional government that awards positions of authority on merit but not on tribal lines.
