KAMPALA – The last few weeks have seen a veritable rush of journalists and civil society activists joining politics ahead of controversial general ‘scientific’ polls slated for early next year.
The latest journalist to make the transfer into politics in the country is the PML Daily editor Shaban Lubega popular name Shaban Benteke who announced a career change early this month.
After spending nearly a decade in Uganda’s sports, the former Vision Group, Record Network and Excel TV reporter and analyst is moving into politics.
“I intend to use my media experience to help the youth shape their future,” he wrote in a post explaining his desire to change the home area from the inside.
The youthful and popular journalist announced his ambitions to run this month, representing Najjanankumbi II as area LC3 Councilor – a place where he was born and still living.
This is the first time that Mr. Lubega has joined elective politics and he says he was inspired by Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine who is also the leader of People Power Movement. Bobi Wine who inspired him into elective politics has since declared intentions to challenge President Museveni who has been in power since before the Berlin Wall fell in the next general elections.
Mr. Lubega is seeking to contest on the People Power group’s ticket saying he aims to contribute towards greater transparency.
He said he trust the values of the Pressure group.
