Parliament wants explanation on controversial death of Makerere student as police denies media access to CCTV footage

KAMPALA – Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga has summoned
the Minister of Internal Affairs Jeje Odong to explain to the country, the circumstances surrounding the death of Emmanuel Tegu on Tuesday, July 14, 2020.

Tegu, a third year student of Veterinary Medicine at Makerere University was allegedly killed by LDUs on June 28, 2020. Police, however, maintain that he was beaten by a mob and not a security operative.

Where as Police spokesperson CP Fred Enanga said that Tegu was beaten while pelting stones to officers, the media was blocked as police received a copy of the CCTV footage from the authorities of St Augustine Chapel.

On Wednesday, Kadaga noted that the University is assumed to be a safe place for children.

“Secondly, I think its time Government explained to Ugandans what they have done to the LDUs who have beaten and killed people – because the reports are there,” she said.

Kadaga further noted that there’s need for all the answered questions concerning the behavior of security operatives.

“Why is it that no LDU has been prosecuted? What action has been taken against these LDUs? We want answers from the Minister of Internal Affairs by Tuesday next week,” she questioned.

With alot of controversy surrounding the death of Tegu, Enaga revealed that 10 suspects whose identities were hidden were arrested on Monday July 6, 2020.

In addition, he said the victim had bipolar mental illness ad he became more aggressive as patrol teams tried to pursue him while he pelted stones to them.
