MBUYA – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has donated an assortment of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and other medical supplies to the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) at the Senior Officers Diagnostic Center in Mbuya.
The Head of Protection Office at the ICRC, Ms. Oriel Gantier, handed over the donation to the Chief of Medical Service (CMS) of the UPDF, Maj Gen Dr Ambrose Musinguzi who represented the Chief of Defence Forces.
The equipment donated included detergents, brooms, buckets, gumboots, mops, jerrycans, and sanitizers. Other items were non-medical masks and non-medical gloves.
Ms Gantier said the donation is part of ICRC’s support to UPDF detention facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Within the framework of our visits to UPDF places of detention, the ICRC supports the detaining authorities in their effort to take care of detainees during the COVID-19 pandemic. That is the reason why we are here today at Mbuya Barracks,” said Ms. Gantier.
The CMS commended the ICRC for it’s continued concern about detainees in UPDF detention centers, both in form of material and psychological support.
He added that the items donated will be put to the best use in safe guarding detainees from COVID-19 infection.
