KAMPALA – Four UPDF soldiers, including a commander, were on Monday, June 29, 2020, charged with murder in connection with the shooting dead of a church leader in Kasese District last week.

Pte Abraham Lokwap,23, Pte Jackson Nyero,23, Pte Joel Otim, 23 and their commander Lt. Talent Akampurira,34, appeared before the army court chaired by Lt. Col. Felix Nyero sitting at Karusandara in Kasese.

He read to them charges of murder by shooting of Benon Musimenta, a lay reader at Kogore Church of Uganda under the South Rwenzori diocese on Wednesday, June 24, contrary to section 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act.

Musimenta was shot dead by a UPDF officer while riding on a motorcycle with his wife to the garden at Karungibati, along the Hima- Kasese road.

They denied the charges and prosecution said investigations are currently still ongoing, prompting the court to remand the accused.
