KAMPALA- The Government passed a directive that will require all people to wear masks while in the public or face fine of Shs20,000 or jail term of six months or both.
In his 14th address on Monday, May 18, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni announced that the government will provide free masks to Ugandans of 6years and above at least by June 2.
In a statement dated May 19, Police Spokesperson CP Fred Enanga has tasked the security forces to enforce the directive.
“… Further educate the public on the health and safety risks, as well as the potential consequences of not wearing face masks while in the public, ” he said.
He added that a detailed enforcement program will be availed in due course.
Enanga further noted that the masks that will be delivered through the LC system will lead to the activation of businesses including hotels, restaurants and general merchandise shops outside malls.
“The government has also eased the lockdown on schools and tertiary institutions with candidates, as well as public and private transport. However all these will effectively resume after the completion of the massive distribution of the free masks,” Enanga noted.
He commended the government on the initiative to manufacture and distribute free standard maks that are reusable for all citizens.
