KAMPALA – Finance Minister Matia Kasaija and his Defence counterpart Adolf Mwesige have handed over the Shs20 million allocated to MPs to their respective district taskforces.

While handing over the money to the Kibaale district Covid-19 taskforce on Monday, Kasaija said that his fellow leaders have been putting him on pressure to surrender the money following the president’s directive.

‘‘I was not in parliament when the funds were being allocated to the MPs because I would have given in my word. However the by-gones are the by-gones and we received the money. My fellow leaders were pressurizing me over the money. However after the president’s directive and advise, we have come to handover the money,” he added.

He added that at first, they had started to use the money to buy relief food for the people but when the president ordered them to surrender the money; they also decided to respect the directive.

In Bunyangabu district, Minister Mwesige asked the local government to re-allocate funds to fight Covid 19 as central government has already done.

“What am asking you as leaders is to make sure that there is no local transmission of Covid 19 and tell people to avoid that. Also reallocate all funds you have to the fight of Covid-19 because we have to first save our people then we think of other things,” he said while handing over the money.

The two join the growing list of MPs returning the money that caused public uproar.
