ABIM – Police in Abim district in Karamoja sub region have shot dead a 12-year old boy, a resident of Batanga village, Orwamuge in Lotuke sub county in Abim district during the presidential directives enforcement.

Calvin Omugetum was shot in the mouth on Sunday, May 3 by a police officer who was trying to disperse a group of drunkards allegedly stoning at police officers.

Mr. George Mafuko, the acting District Police Commander confirmed the incident describing it as regrettable saying it was not intentional.

Mafuko said that the police had gone to disperse over 50 people who had gathered drinking and playing loud music inside the home of the deceased.

“When these people saw the police, they started stoning at them seriously, so the police shot on air but unfortunately the bullet got the boy,” he said.

Mafuko said the police rushed the boy to Abim hospital but he died upon reaching to the hospital.

He said three police officers who were a signed to carry the operation have been arrested and the general file inquiry has been opened to establish what went wrong.

“We have arrested all the officers who were in the operations to help us with investigations on what went wrong before we come up with charges against them,” he said.

He appealed the general public in the district to calm down as police
investigations the matter.
