KAMPALA – Three music promoters and a university students have gone to court, demanding that government lifts the lockdown over coronavirus because it has failed to distribute food to all citizens.

In a petition filed in the Civil Division of the High Court on May 13, 2020, Mr. Matovu Aloysious Junior, Musinguzi Abbey aka Abitex, Andrew Mukasa Bajjo aka Abitex and Mbaziira John a student at Kyambogo University assert that people are dying of hunger while the government has failed to distribute food.

In their plaintiff, they claimed that although government committed to distributing food, until the date of filing their suit, many vulnerable families in Wakiso and Kampala had not yet received their food rations.

“The food is inadequate and quality is poor. Government has prohibited people from distributing food yet even with food gathered by government, it is not distributed,” the plaintiff reads in part.

Their lawyer Anthony Wameli of Wameli & Company Advocates said that they are seeking for an order to enable volunteers who can distribute food to do it directly to communities without any hindrance. He said that their prayer to court is mainly to order government to distribute all food gathered and lay down a program that is clear on how Ugandans will get food or lift the lockdown immediately.

Matovu said many Ugandans have donated food items to the Covid 19 National Task force but wondered where it has gone.

They claimed that even where food has been distributed, the method has been discriminatory, leaving many people yearning.
