UPDF soldier who lost eye while enforcing curfew transferred to Mbuya hospital for further treatment

AMURU-UPDF soldier Alex Niwanyine has on April 13 been transferred to Mbuya General Millitary Hospital for further attention UPDF spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire has confirmed.

Mr Niwanyine was admitted in Gulu hospital after being attacked by a civilian while he was enforcing presidential directive on curfew on April 12,2020.

“Pte Niwanyine Alex who was attacked in Bibia while enforcing measures to prevent COVID19,has been evacuated to Mbuya General Military Hospital for further attention. We wish well our Comrade .The struggle to keep our people and country safe continues,” Karemire tweeted.

In addition, the Minister of State for Defense&Veterans Affairs(General Duties)Hon Col (Rtd) Charles Engola has visited Pte Niwanyine Alex while he was still in Gulu hospital.

He was accompanied by Brig Gen Bonny Bamwisaki the 4 Infantry Division Commander.

Mr Niwanyine who is also an escort of the Amuru district RDC was attacked on April 11, 2020 by a one Stephen Olibia at as he was asking people to close their shops at around 8:30pm in Bibia town council.

The incident was revealed by the UPDF spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire on his twitter platform.

“He lost his eye when violently attacked in Bibia Town council as he enforced directives to prevent COVID-19. Such incidents emerging including pelting stones at security forces must stop,” reads the tweet.

The suspect has been arrested and is under police custody in Amuru.
