KAMPALA – Three people were on Saturday evening shot and injured after attempting to lynch two police officers who were effecting an arrest.

The incident happened in Palichirukee village, Awere Sub-County in Lira District when Corporal Godfrey Ocan and Constable Paul Lukeca, all from Awere Police Post went to arrest Moses Okello, a UPDF officer for allegedly threatening violence and attempted murder.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River Region Police, is quoted by Uganda Radio Network as saying that upon arrival to effect the arrest of the suspect at around 7pm, an irate mob surrounded the police officers and started pelting stones at them.

Okema disclosed that the officers were left with no option but to defend themselves in the line of duty and fired live bullets to disperse the rowdy crowd hence injuring the trio during the ensuing scuffle.

The injured include; Bosco Odong, 28, a resident of Arukutuma village, Lagile Parish, 16-year-old Samuel Canogura of the same area and Francis Obedgiu age 17, a resident of Palichirukee village in Awere Sub-County.

All the wounded were evacuated and rushed to a nearby Lagile Health Centre II but Odong and Obedgiu have been referred to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for better treatment since their conditions needed specialized treatment.
