COVID-19 UPDATE: Museveni addresses country again at 8 p.m tonight, to announce tough measures for cargo truck drivers

KAMPALA —President Museveni is tonight at 8:00 p.m expected to address announce new measures aimed at stopping the spread of the coronavirus virus.

The President mentioned on Friday that he will in detailed address, address the issue of truck drivers and cross-border trade amid coronavirus lockdown in the region.

“Tests have shown that we have problems with the truck drivers and at this very moment, the Minister of Health is meeting line ministers of the different East African Countries to map a way forward,” he said.

‘I will address this matter in detail on Tuesday,” he said on Friday, a day he flagged off a fleet of vehicles to help the Ministry of Health in the fight against COVID-19.

He added: We want to test these drivers before they come here. They should only be allowed to move when the results are released,” he added.

Kenya and Uganda on Friday adopted new measures that will be followed by cross-border truck drivers in a bid to control the further spread of coronavirus among the group.

For Uganda, the National Taskforce for COVID-19 resolved among others that each transit truck will one driver they should have designated stop areas with a maximum 3 per route.

President Museveni is expected to give details of the resolutions by ministers and national taskforce.

Uganda, which reported its first case of Covid-19 on 22 has now 79 confirmed cases.

Total recoveries now stand at 52 while death toll remains at zero.

Dr. Henry G. Mwebesa, the Director-General Health Services at Ministry of Health on Saturday April 25 said that out of the confirmed foreign truck drivers, four Tanzanian and 6 truck drivers have been repatriated to their respective countries.

The coronavirus is affecting 211 other countries around the world including one international conveyance (the Diamond Princess cruise ship harbored in Yokohama, Japan).
