MALABA – Two police officers who were caught on video seemingly soliciting for bribes from cargo truck drivers at the Malaba entry border point have been arrested.

The video, which went viral over the weekend, showed the two officers stopping each trucks before seemingly picking what looked like money from the drivers before allowing the vehicles to continue. The voice in the video is heard raising concern that these men in uniform were at risk of acquiring coronavirus.

And on Sunday, police have the arrest of the duo who were identified as Police constable No. 58976 Fred Muwoya and No. 62176 Steven Masereka.

The district police commander, Rogers Chebene, said the two officers have also been placed under quarantine as the investigations into the matter continues.

“When you look at the video, it’s not very clear whether they were extorting money or they were just on their routing duty checkups but the investigation will highlight,” he said.

The officers are most likely to face charges of attempting to cause the spread of an infectious disease.
