WAKISO-The ongoing relief food distribution in Kampala Metropolitan Policing Area has been rolled out from Kampala to parts of Wakiso District.

The exercise aimed at supporting the most vulnerable people affected by the partial lockdown due to COVID -19, started in Kawempe Division on April 4, 2020.

The distribution later rolled to all the Divisions of Kampala and has now commenced in Namugongo, Nabweru and Nansana Divisions of Wakiso District.

The overall commander of the distribution operation, Brig Gen Julius Biryebarema said, “We have extended from Kampala to parts of Wakiso District covering first the three Divisions of the District. The slums of Katooke, Kisimu, and Kasokoso that fall in the three Divisions are currently being served.”

“Meanwhile , the distribution team working in Kampala District has started distribution in Kamwokya slums commonly known as The Ghetto where the residents have warmly welcomed the joint team, ” he added.

With Kamwokya and Kasokoso being covered, Mr Biryabarema said the distribution team is concluding serving the largest and most concentrated slums in the targeted area.

“We have already served the largest slums in Bwaise, Kisenyi, Kinawataka, Katwe, Nakulabye, Makerere, Kawempe I, Mulago, Wabigalo, Nsambya, Old Kampala, Bukasa, Kasubi, Kiswa, Naguru and Kabawo among others. With now Kamwokya and Kasokoso being handled, we will roll out faster since the targeted people in other settlements are a little sparsely populated,” said Brig Gen Biryabarema.

The Brig Gen added that the food distribution exercise has now picked full momentum after all the resources have been assembled with more recipients served per day as compared to when the exercise just started.

“Despite the impact of rains that lower down our speed of distribution by at times close to 50% performance per day, we still serve over 30,000 people per day, three to four times the numbers we served at the start,” he said.

The exercise that was launched on April 4,2020 by the Prime Minister, Rt Hon Ruhakana Rugunda, has seen over 250,000 people being served with served with posho and beans whereas the expectant and breast feeding others received an addition of milk and sugar.
