KIGALI — The Episcopal Conference of Rwanda (ECR) has asked God to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus that has erupted into a pandemic.

The ECR is the umbrella organization of all Catholic Bishops in Rwanda, in a pastoral message asks the “merciful God to listen to our prayers” for those all who have been affected.

In Rwanda, 41 cases are confirmed but no deaths yet – making Rwanda with highest figure in the region. The country is currently in a total two-week lockdown.

Globally, over 300,000 people have been infected, thousands killed. However, more than 90 percent of the victims have recovered from available treatments. The desperate wait is on for a vaccine that could come next year at the earliest.

The Catholic church, to which about 46% of Rwanda’s population lays allegiance, is now asking God for the vaccine to be found quickly.

“We come before you God to pray that you stop this pandemic, heal all those infected, receive in your Kingdom those who have been killed, and wipe the tears of their families,” reads the pastoral note signed by Monseigneur Filipo Rukamba, head of the Episcopal conference.

“Here, we pray, in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.”
