NAIROBI – Students at the University of Nairobi on Monday night rioted- burning down hostels in protest over the death of a colleague.

The student is said to have died from beatings by security guards who man the University of Nairobi hostels.

A UoN student leader said the student was beaten up by guards who then abandoned him at Central Park near the main campus.

“The guards claim the student was a goon, yet we know him as a fellow comrade,” said the student leader.

He said that the torched buildings were abandoned hostels commonly known as prefabs.

The Kenyans.co.ke quoting the source, reports that the deceased student – Kyte Ondeng’, was allegedly abducted just outside the campus by unknown assailants on Wednesday, March 4, only for the lifeless body to be found at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

The irate students stormed through State House Road as they engaged police in running battles, before moving on to Valley Road.

According to one of the students who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke in confidentiality, evening classes at the main campus were canceled following the unrest.

Kenyans who came across the raging mob advised motorists to avoid the area as the highly-charged students were hell-bent on destruction.

“UoN students protesting along Valley Road, Mamlaka Road, and State House Road. Exercise caution” reads one of the countless tweets sent out alerting motorists to seek alternative routes.

Traffic on the bustling busy Valley Road, especially during rush hour, was greatly disrupted following the riots which kicked off from the main campus along University Way at around 6:45 p.m.
