VALENCIA — National Water and Sewerage Cooperation (NWSC) has scooped the the “Idrica Circular Economy Water Project of the Year 2020” Award during the WEXGlobal 2020 conference in Valencia, Spain.

WEX Global is unique event that brings together more than 80 speakers, from 40+ countries, to debate on critical issues relating to “Delivering Smart Circular Solutions for a more Sustainable World”.

Unlike many utilities, NWSC has taken the route of developing its own home grown solutions to respond to the pressing water and sewerage challenges in the sector.

Among the innovations shared in the context of circular economy was the move for energy cost efficiency & renewable energy (solar) in operations; planned energy production from biogas at the Bugolobi sewage treatment plant, the production of briquettes (biofuel) from the Lubigi sewage treatment plant sludge and production of fertilisers from the sludge and the various digital transformations happening at the corporation.

Handing over the award, Mr Mark Barker, the WEXGlobal organiser described the NWSC MD Dr Eng Silver Mugisha as a man who has defied all odds of not looking for off-shelf solutions like most utilities but rather seek innovative ideas to develop home grown innovations and mobilise meaningful partnerships to enhance incubation and development of NWSC home grown innovations

“He is a benchmark for many global CEO’s,” he said.
