MPIGI – Famous Fr. Deogratius Kiibi, a priest at Mpigi Town Catholic Parish has on Sunday, March 29 been arrested for with seven followers for holding a religious gathering.

Captain Godfrey Matovu, the district Internal Security Officer said that Fr. Kiibi was arrested for defying the presidential directive on holding any gatherings including church services in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

On Wednesday, March 18, President Yoweri Museveni announced the ban on public gatherings, including church mass and services for 32 days.

Addressing the nation, Mr. Museveni said that cabinet under his chairmanship had suspended all public gatherings, sporting events, open-air religious meetings and “all events that are of a huge public nature”.

Fr Kiibi was arrested after finding him in church with about seven members of the congregation conducting Mass this morning.

Captain Matovu said that the suspects are currently detained at Mpigi Central Police Station pending further investigations.
