KAMPALA — The service is underway for the installation of Bishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu as the new Archbishop of the Province of the Church of Uganda at St Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe.

Dr Kaziimba was elected by the House of Bishops in 2019 to replace His Grace Stanley Ntagali who retires after 10 years as head of the Anglican Communion in Uganda.

President Yoweri Museveni is presiding over the biggest ceremony by Church of Uganda.

Besides the 34 bishops from the Anglican dioceses in Uganda, other leaders from different religious denominations are in attendance at Namirembe.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby who arrived in the country two days ago is also in attendance.

The Archbishop of Canterbury is the senior bishop and principal leader of the Church of England, the symbolic head of the worldwide Anglican Communion and the diocesan bishop of the Diocese of Canterbury.

Several other religious, political and cultural leaders are also gathered at Namirembe for the historical event.

Some of the leaders include First Lady Janet Museveni, Nabageraka of Buganda Sylvia Nagginda, Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga, Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda, Buganda Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayega, former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi and his wife Jackline Mbabazi and several ministers from Buganda Kingdom among others.

At the service of enthronement, the outgoing Archbishop will hand over the Provincial Staff – a symbol of the Archbishop’s spiritual authority to the new, incoming Archbishop, according to the statement.
