KAMPALA — President Yoweri Museveni has announced suspension of all forms of public transport in Uganda for 14 days as government moved to contain the spread of Coronavirus infections countrywide.
With the increasing cases, the President says he does not want to take more chances.
“The government has decided to suspend for 14 days, all public transport, including all taxis, coasters, buses, passenger trains, tuk-tuks and Boda-bodas,” he said.
“Private cars shall be allowed to move on the road but they shall not have more than three people in the car, including the driver,” he added.
He said trucks shall be allowed to transport goods but They should however not carry passengers.
“The same applies to bodas, and tuktuk-tuks. They can move as long as they are transporting food”
The president said markets should only be now for selling food stuffs. This means…matooke, sweet potatoes, cassava, rice, beans, peas, gnuts, beef chicken, fruits, vegetables etc.
Trading other non food items is from now onwards suspended..clothes, necklaces, mobile phones.
“I have heard some people have tried to do everything possible to keep hygiene. However, how do you maintain 4 metres when there are so many people,” he noted.
The head of state also directed that public offices should work out the essential staff that are needed to remain on duty.
“Even in the districts, the officials can identify boda bodas who can deliver food and other cargo to wherever it is needed. This crisis will teach us other methods of doing business.”
