TORORO – Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) in collaboration with Huawei has on Friday, February 21, 2020, donated 20 laptops to Tororo Girls School.

In total URA in partnership with Huawei are donating 20 more laptops to Lira secondary school next week.

This is in addition to 40 laptops given to Kololo S.S Kampala and St. Thereza girls’ schools-Hoima that benefited last year.

Ian Rumanyika the Ag. Assistant Commissioner Public and Corporate Affairs at URA said that these computers will assist the beneficiaries to gain quality education through skilling the future generation in ICT skills.

Mr. Rumanyika said for a school to benefit in the programme, they must be a government school but also Tax compliant. The Taxman promised to come back and launch a Tax club at the school to be added to the over 43 tax clubs across the country.

“We are building a tax alert generation that is more responsible and understands why they have to pay taxes.” He noted.

Angel Zhoulixue Huawei’s Chief Finance Officer (CFO) said the reason they are collaborating with URA is to enhance ICT skills in Uganda. As Huawei, they will do more in digitizing Uganda by giving more support to the ICT sector.

She encouraged young girls to work hard. She added that she studied from a rural school where she managed to join one of the best Universities in China and later on got a top management job in a big organization like Huawei. This is because of hard work and discipline pays.

“It’s never too late for you young ladies of Tororo girls to be like us on this side of the table or even better” she advised.

Hellen Wataba the school Headmistress appreciated the fact that they have been thought of by URA and Huawei technologies. “We had a few workings computers in our computer lab, yet the school accommodates over 1600 students, but also this has come in at the right time when we are introducing the new curriculum that emphasizes practical skilling” she added.

URA through the school outreach program has pledged to work with the Ministry of education and Huawei technologies in inculcating a tax-paying culture among the potential Taxpayers.

“5 to 10 years from now you will be sitting in the positions we are in and you will be responsible citizens that need to choose to be willing and compliant Taxpayers. Your future is brighter”  Ian Rumanyika said in his closing remarks amidst cheers from the students.
