Soldier, son killed in fight with Karamojong warriors

Several livestock were reportedly raided by unknown after shooting a soldier on Thursday night (PHOTO/File).

NAPAK – A UPDF soldier and his child have been killed during the clash with suspected Matheniko cattle rustlers in Napak district.

The incident that took place on Thursday 6, 2020 midnight.

Mr. Elijah Lobucel, the sub county LC3 chairperson Lokopo told the press that the warriors exchanged gun fight with the officer before over powering him and took away unspecified number of cows, goats and sheep.

He said the killed soldier was among other soldiers who were deployed to protect animals in Kabtabok kraal in katabok village, Lokopo Sub County.

“They seriously fought and in the morning when we went to the scene, we found one solider dead and a child who was with them in the Kraal,” he said.

Mr. Lobucel said they are following foot marks of the warriors and they were heading to Kobebe dam in Moroto district and indication showing that the attackers are the Matheniko of Moroto district.

Major Telesphar Turyamumanya, the UPDF 3rd division spokesperson confirmed the incident saying it will not stop army from perusing peace in Karamoja.

“We lost our soldier, a child and they took away our gun after an exchange but we are perusing them and they have not gone far we shall get them,” he said.

He, however, calls for calm from the general public saying the situation was not worrying as its being portrayed by some development partners operating in Karamoja with the aim to get more funding from the donors.
