KAMPALA – The Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has asked the government to compensate former Makerere University Researcher Dr. Stella Nyanzi for the time she spent in jail.

Nyanzi was last Thursday freed from prison after she was acquitted of charges of cyber harassment and offensive communication she allegedly committed against the President in 2018.

FDC party spokesman Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda said while they are happy that the sentence handed out by “a visibly biased magistrate” was overturned by the High Court judge, the government must compensate her. Mr Nganda also demanded that she is reinstated to her job at Makerere.

“As FDC, we demand that Dr. Nyanzi be fully compensated for time she has spent in jail. She should also be immediately reinstated or compensated for the unfair removal from Makerere University. Museveni and the wife must be reminded that running public affairs will and must attract criticism, fair or unfair. That is what you face when you seek to lead others,” he told journalists in Kampala on Monday, February 24, 2020.

“Remember Nyanzi was also arrested in April 2017 for criticizing Mr. Museveni’s wife Ms Janet Kataha’s management of education ministry. She was charged with cyber harassment. This case remains unresolved. Between wife and husband, the Museveni’s have deprived Dr. Nyanzi an opportunity to live with her family. Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe supervised by Janet Kataha, took advantage of her incarceration to remove her from Makerere where she was a lecturer,” he added.
