MUBENDE – Police in Mubende District on Sunday, January 19, 2020, blocked and dispersed an FDC leaders’ meeting that was organised in Gwaniika Village, Nabingola Sub-county in Kasambya constituency.
FDC Deputy President for central region Joyce Nabbosa Ssebugwawo had led a delegation of leaders, including FDC Vice Chairman central Kibuka Mukalazi, Mrs Ssebuwufu Harriet Nakiyemba, the Ethics and Culture Secretary; Muzei Kalule Samuel Kiseyeye, the Secretary for Elders, Mr. Kizito Livingston of the Security Committee, among others, to meet the local party branch in Mubende in a bid to reorganize the lower level structures.
But Police commanded by ASP Ssekalema Shaban, the OC Station, blocked the meeting that was organised at Home Land Organic Gardens, saying the party leaders did not notify the police leadership in the area.
FDC have condemned the move. “Some elements in the security agencies continue to abuse the Ugandan Constitution by blocking the right to assemble by Ugandans in a bid to protect the interests of a junta regime. We shall continue to defy all unlawful orders given to some of these junior naive Security officers by the rogue regime,” a party statement reads in part.
Ahead of the 2021 elections, police have been in the spotlight for banning consultative meetings organized by Opposition players.
Early this month, police blocked two meetings organised by Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, first in Kasangati, Wakiso District on Monday and another which was scheduled in Gulu District.
