Kafuuzi’s ministerial appointment was on January 03, 2020, questioned by the Parliamentary Appointments Committee for lack of the mandatory 7year experience. It is said that Kafuuzi stopped renewing his practicing license as an advocate in 2016 when he was elected as MP (PHOTO/File).

KAMPALA – Lawmakers on the Parliament’s Appointments Committee have finally cleared embattled Jackson Kafuuzi (Kyaka South) to take up his new job as Deputy Attorney General.

President Yoweri Museveni made a reshuffle in his cabinet naming Kafuuzi to the post of Deputy Attorney General, replacing Mwesigwa Rukutana who was named State Minister for Gender.

However, Parliament vetted, approved the other eight members of cabinet, Kafuuzi missed out at the official swearing in ceremony at State House Entebbe, after many questions arose regarding his competence to the job.

Sources within the Parliament Appointments Committee revealed that Kafuuzi’s ministerial appointment was questioned for lack of the mandatory 7year experience for one to have practiced as an advocate before one is named to head the Attorney General Chambers.

It was revealed that Kafuuzi stopped renewing his practicing license as an advocate in 2016 when he was elected as MP, an oversight that cost Kafuuzi his ministerial position.

The eight ministers include Rafael Magyezi minister Local government, Judith Nabakooba for Information and ICT, Beatrice Anywar State minister for Environment, Helen Adoa  minister of state for Fisheries,  Robinah Nabanjja state minister for Health, Denis Obua state Sports, Peter Ogwang state minister for ICT and Molly Kamukama minister of state for Economic Monitoring

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga was forced to write to High Court, seeking their opinion on Kafuuzi’s court experience and court cleared him which prompted Kadaga to call for another meeting to reconsider Kafuuzi’s fate.

At today’s meeting, Kafuuzi is said to have furnished the Committee with a volume of documents to support his work experience and as opposed to his earlier appearance, the incoming Deputy Attorney General exuded more composure and confidence, coupled with answering questions with clarity.

Addressing journalists after his vetting, Kafuuzi refuted arguments fronted by other members in the legal fraternity saying the constitution doesn’t mention the requirement of practicing experience, but all one requires to take up the position is an experience equivalent to that.
