KAMPALA – Gertrude Nakabira, the former Lwengo district Woman Member of Parliament has on January 19, 2020, died of cancer.

Nakabira died at St Francis Hospital Nsambya where she was admitted.

Isaac Ssejoba, the former MP for Bukoto Mid-West constituency and a close friend to the family confirmed her death.

“Our colleague has been sick for a period of close to five years. However, she got worse over the last three months and has been receiving treatment at Nsambya hospital,” he said.

“Arrangements are being made to ensure that her body is transported from Nsambya hospital to her home in Lwengo,” he added.

Nakabira is the first Woman MP to represent Lwengo district after it was carved out of Masaka from 2011 to 2016.

In the 2016 general election she contested for the Bukoto South Constituency seat which she lost to the incumbent MP Mohammad Muyanja Mbabali.

From 2005 to 2010, she served as the Sembabule District Education Officer.

Having served the nation as a teacher for 35 active years, Nakibira had been a local education consultant in the greater Masaka sub-region.

Florence Kintu, the former Kalungu district Woman MP who served with Nakabira has eulogized the late as a committed team leader who always lived as an example to others.
