Police arrests three notorious phone snatchers after CCTV footage review

KAMPALA – The Territorial Command in Kira road and Kololo Airstrip have conducted an intelligence-led operation that was backed up by CCTV footage and arrested three notorious phone snatchers.

Police Spokesperson CP Fred Enanga said the suspects also participated in incidents of simple robbery and phone thefts along the Fairway Hotel junction and Golf Course stretch.

“The suspects include; Nabisere Paul aka Tirinyi, a 20-year-old male adult and resident of Salaama road in Makindye.  He has been the Chairman (ring leader) of phone snatchers at Fairway junction and the Golf Course stretch.  His other two co-suspects include; Faidah Abdul Mutwalib, a 21-year-old, resident of Busabala and Summa Ronald, a 26-year-old, resident of Boston village, Makindye Division,” he said in a statement date December 9.

Mr. Enanga said the trio admitted to plying their illegal trade of snatching phones along Yusuf Lule road Fairway junction over the weekends.

“Their area of operation included other areas like Kansanga, Nalya, Lugogo bypass, Kamwokya, and Kitante.  They had created such a violent environment along these traffic junctions,” he said.

Enanga added that “The operation to an effective crackdown on these gangs is ongoing and efforts to trace for others identified but still at large are in place.  Some of whom it is established, come from Katanga, Nakulabye, Kamwokya and Naguru godown.  The trio has been targeting foreign nationals and occupants in government vehicles.  They sell their loot at cooper complex building.”

He further commended the unprecedented cooperation from members of the public and in particular, Mr. Otim Olile, who wrote in one of the newspapers about the nasty conduct of the criminals along the Golf Course stretches.
