KAMPALA — The Member of Parliament for Kampala Central, Mr Muhammad Nsereko, has said the ruling NRM will not have a Member of Parliament in Kampala in 2021 elections if they don’t change their strategy.
President Museveni has targeted the ghetto and artistes in a bid to win over Bobi Wine’s strongholds in Kampala metropolitan area but Mr Nsereko said this will not work.
“On a political note, the Museveni I know and worked with drops one eye, but he is using the other to do something else. He engages you in your stronghold and you lose an eye on his stronghold,” he said.
“To those in the NRM who think they will win Kampala, that is a tall order for you. The ghetto has been there, it is not a new phenomenon. Without changing their strategies, NRM will not have an MP from Kampala,” he added.
Mr Nsereko, a member of the NRM, who has become a strong critic of his own party, also urged the opposition to unite if they want to take power.
“There are very many challenges within the opposition and every opportunity to come up with a united opposition front has been thwarted by internal politics. This issue of jumping on every bandwagon that comes will not take us anywhere. When you consistently carry on a message that does not yield results, you get hatred from the backlash,” he said.
“There is nothing too late in a struggle. We still have over 12 months to go. Whether it is Besigye or Kyagulanyi, none of them can single-handedly win the action. The strongholds will be split and I can assure you that the incumbent will win,” he added.
Mr Nsereko also blames the electoral commission for the court’s nullification of parliamentary by-elections in six areas.
“These are three arms of government that can advise one another. When we are legislating, we expect advise from the Executive. The ruling of the court was clear, but the subject matter is not there. These legislators ordered to vacate parliament can only seek the remedy of judicial review. They can only buy time, but consequentially, they have been declared illegal. But it is not their fault. The Electoral Commission announced that there is a vacancy. When you see some insanity out there, go to the court. This has shown that there is still some sanity in our courts of law,” he said.
