KAMPALA – Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko has urged Dr Kizza Besigye to declare early enough if he wants to run for president in 2021.

According to Mr Nsereko, Dr Besigye’s declaration will help unite the opposition ahead of the 2021 elections.

“I am going to tell Besigye that we are stronger together and the issue ahead of us is the completion of the struggle. No one is kicking him out of the struggle. If he still wants to be a presidential candidate, he needs to let the country know early,” he said during an interview on Monday.

Dr Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate, recently lashed out at his critics who say it is time to give way to another opposition leader to challenge President Museveni. Instead, he said he cannot leave the struggle because he is fighting for his own freedom.

His remarks come after Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine declared that he will run for president in 2021.

To this, Mr Nsereko said the division of the opposition vote will open the way for Museveni to win in 2021.

“There are very many challenges within the opposition and every opportunity to come up with a united opposition front has been thwarted by internal politics. This issue of jumping on every bandwagon that comes will not take us anywhere. When you consistently carry on a message that does not yield results, you get hatred from the backlash,” he said.

“There is nothing too late in a struggle. We still have over 12 months to go. Whether it is Besigye or Kyagulanyi, none of them can single-handedly win the action. The strongholds will be split and I can assure you that the incumbent will win,” he added.
