KAMPALA – The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has unveiled a youth pressure group, which party insiders said is intended to counter the growing influence of People Power movement among the young men and women in the country ahead of the 2021 elections.
The NRM youth group has been named ‘Generation Seven Youth (G7),’ composed of youth born after 1986 “with an objective to economically empower their peers in the country”. The group prides itself in the achievements gained by the NRM government.
The pressure group on Thursday, November 07, 2019 marched through the city with police protection and then to the party offices where they were received by the NRM Director of Finance & Administration, Dr Hassan Galiwango.
The youth, who were led by their spokesperson, Mr Stephen Mukasa, applauded the party Secretariat for the work done towards uplifting the party structures in the country. They pledged their continued support to the party and in all its upcoming activities.
The move comes two days after the People Power movement launched a youth wing dubbed ‘Students Power’ in a bid to galvanise the pressure group’s support ahead of 2021 elections.
During the launch at the home of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine in Magere, Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District on Tuesday, November 05, 2019, People Power students’ representatives were also unveiled.
Mr Joel Ssenyonyi, the People Power spokesperson, hailed the students for standing up to the government for their rights and urged them to desist from all forms of violence.
The student’s movement has been tasked to preach the gospel of liberation. The student’s movement consists of students from various universities across the country.
“We are saying we are not going to sit back and see these institutions go down. Holding a placard is not violence, it is you Museveni who went to the bush and killed people. That is what we call violence,” Mr Ssenyonyi said on Tuesday.
He also told the students that People Power has no money at the moment but when they take over the government in 2021, they will consider buying Land Cruiser V8 cars for them.
“Calling me boss implies that you expect me to pay you salary, Senyonyi told Tundulu the MC who introduced him as boss before adding that “We will buy for you the mpa enkonis of Kusasiras and the likes when we take overpower. That is when we will afford to pay you,” Ssenyonyi promised.
In attendance was Tundulu Jonathan, the Kyambogo University guild president, chairman Nyanzi (Bobi Wine’s brother), Bobi Wine, Roy Ssemboga among other top People Power diehards.
