KAMPALA – Speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga has directed the State Minister of Internal Affairs, Mario Obiga Kania to explain to Parliament on the whereabouts of over 120 traders that were arrested from the areas of Katwe and Kibuye on allegations of theft and criminality in the area.

The Speaker made the directive during Tuesday’s plenary sitting following a matter raised by Allan Sewanyana, (Makindye West) who raised a matter of national importance revealing that in October, Police conducted an operation in Katwe in which over 200 traders were arrested.

Ssewanyana claims that the affected people included traders whom they found at their shops, counters, customers and some children below the age of 13 years and that relatives of the suspects were shocked when only 80 people were paraded before court and now they would like government to inform them on the whereabout of 120 people who were arrested during the operation.

Ssewanyana also wants the government to settle the hearts of traders in the area because many are still scared of opening their shops with the fear that the operation might resume again which he says has affected trade in the area.

This prompted the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga to demand that the minister of internal affairs next week updates parliament on the whereabout of 120 residents in the area.
