KAMPALA – The People Power movement has rebuked President Museveni for appointing Mark Bugembe, aka, Butcherman as his special envoy to the ghetto.

President Museveni made the announcement while meeting NRM youth from the ghetto who met him near Kibuye roundabout on Saturday afternoon. He also appointed musician Catherine Kusasira, Senior Presidential Advisor on Kampala. He promised to facilitate their offices to carry out mobilization for NRM.

But the leader of the People Power movement, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, said the President’s move is laughable given that he has over the last 33 years  impoverished, marginalised & ignored the ghetto people.

“The folly of dictatorship! For 34 years, this man impoverished, marginalised & ignored the ghetto people. He evicted them from their land. He didn’t care about their health, their education or their lives. He over taxed them, tortured them and killed so many of them. He thought the ghetto didn’t matter,” said Bobi Wine, who has since branded himself the Ghetto President, in a statement posted on his Facebook page on Sunday.

He said after so many years, and tired of indignity, the ghetto people rose up to speak for themselves through him who is now a Member of Parliament.

“He first dismissed us. But we persisted. He threatened us. We stood firm. He bribed some ghetto people but the ghetto youth stated on course. They asked me to continue shaking the tree, because that is the only time they saw government coming to them. Having failed in all his schemes; very scared and desperate, President Museveni now returns as ‘Man of Ghetto.’ The sheer lack of shame! I can assure him that the authentic ghetto people will not permit him to mock them,” he added.

The People Power Spokesperson Mr Joel Ssenyonyi said by appointing Butcherman and Kusasira as his envoys, Mr Museveni is trying to brand himself as “Man of Ghetto” thinking the ghetto people will fall for his trap.

“The ghetto people know better than to be taken for a ride. For Mr Museveni to come now and bribe ghetto people yet he has denied them service delivery all this while shows what kind of leader he is, a transactional leader, not a transformational one,” Mr Ssenyonyi said.
