Park View Shopping Centre fire: Police, eyewitnesses speak out

KAMPALA —Owners of Paradise Cafe and Restaurant located at Park view Shopping Centre along Kampala’s Burton street are counting losses after fire gutted their premises on Sunday morning.

Both Police and eyewitnesses say fire started at 7 am with heavy smoke flowing out of the restaurant.

Moments later, a huge fire was seen razing Paradise Cafe and Restaurant.

Eyewitnesses said the fire was powerful and difficult to contain.

“The fire was too much and the doors were closed and very difficult to breakdown” an eyewitness told NTV Uganda.

Another one said there many restaurant at the building, but it was only one (Paradise Cafe and Restaurant) that was affected.

Kampala Metropolitan Area deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Oweyisigire said there are no casualties reported and the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Eyewitnesses said that it took time for the fire bridged to access the promises due to ongoing works and congestion in the area.

“Fire bridged found a difficult time to access Park View [Shopping Centre] to put out the fire.”

The cause of the fire has, however, not yet been established.

Mr. Oweyisigire said investigators are writing statements and also picked exhibits from the scene which can help the force establish the the cause of the fire.

“But we suspect it could have been a stove that was probably left on or electricity,” he speculated, adding that all that will be proved by the police report later on.

Where as inside the restaurant, most property was burnt beyond recognition, police said that firefighters were able to stop the forward progress of the blaze and no injuries or damage to the structure has been reported.

The Park View Shopping Centre also houses a number of business including a popular Saloon owned by Eddie Mutwe, a personal bodyguard to Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.
