KAMPALA – The Vice President H.E Edward Ssekandi has recommended thorough accountability in different sectors of the government as one way of fighting corruption in the country.
The VP was Friday morning openning the Accountability Sector Joint Annual Review (ASJAR) 2019 at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
The National Policy on Public Sector Monitoring and Evaluation provides for the need for all sectors to conduct joint annual reviews with stakeholders.
In his remarks, Ssekandi said accountability is a major pillar in the architecture of the NRM Government, adding that the annual reviews should lead to the development of concrete recommendations and undertakings for the promotion of accountability in the country.
Ssekandi said the annual review should result into a culture of accountability in the country adding the NRM government takes pride in anti-corruption structures that have been put in place.
The VP said that the political support in the fight against corruption is paramount.
Finance Minister Matia Kasaija said all citizens have a role to play in ensuring accountability at all levels of Government.
“We are committed to supporting the implementation of all the agreed actions at this ASJAR,” said Kasaija.
The Minister said the planned interventions in the National Development Plan 3 include: Operationalization of the Leadership Code Tribunal, Undertaking value for money audit for Karuma and Isimba power dams, Implementation of the domestic revenue mobilization strategy as well as rolling out the E-Government procurement system.
Kasaija said during FY 2018/19 Uganda’s Economic growth stood at 6.5 % not (6.1%) according to the recent GDP Rebase by UBOS up from 5.8% in FY 2017/18.
The growth of the economy was driven by a strong performance by the services sector (7.5%), Industry sector (5.8%) and agriculture sector (3.8%).
