Mob destroys property worth millions after UPDF officer was killed in bar brawl

An upset mob destroyed property worth millions of shillings in in Rukungiri district (PHOTO/File)

RUKUNGIRI – An irate mob on Sunday September 29 destroyed property worth millions of shillings in Rubabi Village, Rushasha Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub-County, Rukungiri District following the death of Edwin Masiko after a bar brawl.

According to the Kigezi Region Police spokesman AIP Elly Maate, Edwin Masiko, 30, a UPDF personnel attached to Kabongo Division a one Ivan Monday and Danson Mbabazi are said to have fought Mr. Masiko on Thursday, September 24, at Kyabugashe Trading Centre, Kyabugashe Village, Rushasha parish, Nyakagyeme sub-county.

Masiko was badly injured which prompted his relatives to rush him to Nyakibale Hospital where he was later referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital. Mr Masiko was pronounced dead on Friday, September 27.

When news of the death spread angry residents descended on Seth Nuwagaba’s home and destroyed property worth millions.

Mr. Nuwagaba a 58-year-old businessman owns the bar among other properties.

According to Mr. Maate, Nuwagaba’s home was set blaze and three houses were destroyed, goats and cows injured and some stolen.

Mr. Nuwagaba had earlier reported to police that he received threats from relatives of the deceased in Rukungiri. The Rukungiri District Police Commander, Moses Nanoka, consequently deployed security to guard the home. The situation normalised and Police withdrew, but surprisingly shortly after Police withdrew, the mob attacked on Sunday morning.

“Police was notified. We rushed to the scene led by Detective AIP Kabagambe, and the Deputy OC CID Rukungiri together with a team of Detectives and other personnel. No suspects have been arrested yet but investigations into the matter are ongoing,” Mr Maate added.
