KAMPALA – The public has expressed shock at the wealth of Mohan Musisi Kiwanuka as the businessman battles his son Jordan Ssebuliba Kiwanuka over the management of the former’s business empire.

Mr Kiwanuka and Ms Ssebuliba are currently tussling it out in court, with the son claiming the father is unable to manage the business empire due to poor health. As a result, he wants court to grant him the management of the estate. However, in response, Mr Kiwanuka denies being mentally ill and claims that Ssebuliba is not even his son.

Last week, High Court Judge Musa Ssekaana issued an interim order restraining Mr Ssebuliba, his agents, servants, associates, advisors or anyone acting upon his instructions from interfering with the 33 properties/ businesses.

The ongoing fight over the property has brought Mr Kiwanuka’s property to the fore, with many wondering how such wealth has been living such a modest life.

Mr Kiwanuka, who is also the husband of former Finance minister Maria Kiwanuka, does not like the limelight. In fact, many people close to him say despite his vast wealth, he sometimes uses commuter taxis on his way to transact business downtown. He often wears plain short-sleeved shirts, which accentuates his ill-fitting image as a ‘common man’.

However, the contents of documents deposited at the Civil Division of the High Court in Kampala recently lifted a lid on the businessman’s vast wealth.

In the court documents, Mr Kiwanuka owns 46 prime properties in Kampala worth an unspecified sum.

Of the 46 properties that Mr Ssebuliba listed, at least 26 are found in Kololo.  Another property which has been cited in the ongoing wrangle is comprised in 50 acres located at Sonde in Mukono District.

Documents by Mr Ssebuliba show that his father has agreed to sell it off at Shs200m per acre, or Shs10b for the 50 acres.     He also owns Radio One and Radio Two.
