KAMPALA – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sam Kutesa has Thursday August 8 received and held discussions with Mr. Huang Xia, the UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region.

Mr. Xia who assumed office earlier this year called on minister Kutesa at the Ministry Headquarters to discuss matters concerning regional peace and security of the Great Lakes Region.

Minister Kutesa who is facing scrutiny for alleged corruption welcomed the Special Envoy to Uganda and commended the efforts by his office to bring peace to Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The two Principals stressed the need to engage and deal with negative forces operating in Eastern DRC and to reintegrate ex-combatants into their communities which would reduce refugee influx into neighboring countries.

The Meeting noted that the collective efforts by relevant regional stakeholders will not only achieve lasting peace in Eastern DRC but also pave way for development of regional integration projects hence strengthening economic ties within the Great Lakes Region.
