MUKONO – The Family and Child’s Protection Unit (FCPU) a department at Mukono police station is stranded with a baby who was dropped by an unidentified person.

The baby girl was found on a verandah of someone’s home together with a suitcase that contained the baby’s clothes and a picture suspected to be of the mother in Kitega, W’antoni in Mukono District.

Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Stella Asaeta working with the FCPU confirmed that they received a phone call at around 3 pm about an abandoned child in Wantoni.

AIP Asaeta said: “We received a phone call from one of the residents in Wantoni at round 3pm informing us that there is a child of roughly 9 months abandoned on someone ‘s veranda.”

“The Child was delivered to us by Mr. Issa Makumbi a resident in Kitega together with a suitcase that we found containing the baby’s clothes and as we continued the check we got a photo of a woman we suspect to be the mother of this child,” she revealed

Ms. Asaeta said that they have opened up a case file for the matter and requested that anybody who would identify the child may come and help in the investigations.

She said: “Am requesting that anybody who can identify this child may come to the station and provide us with any information that can help us in arresting the parents.”

“As of right now we are looking around to see where we can put this child” She added.

She appealed to the women whose husbands neglect them and their children to seek help from the Family and Child’s Protection Unit instead of abandoning their children.

“My appeal to mothers outside there is we are here to help, courts are there to help all those people who are grieved.”

“Never abandon or desert your child because it’s not a good way of upbringing children,” she asserted.

Speaking to the Ms. Grace Kabikyi the Vice Woman Leader (nabakyala) Njerere about the issue and she said that it is so sad for a woman to dump her child while she has been in situations where she has had to mediate families about to split because the woman can not bear a child.

She said: “It is not okay for women to abandon their children yet there are women out there looking for children yet they can not have any.”

“Abandoning your child is not the answer to whatever you are going through.” She added
