NAKAPIRIPIRIT – Police in Nakapiripirit district in Karamoja sub-region in northeastern Uganda has destroyed over 2,000 liters of crude waragi worth UGX 700 million shillings.
The waragi was destroyed on Thursday morning of August 22, after it was impounded by the police in Nakapiripirit district.
Ms. Gertrude Temaya the district police commander in Nakapiripirit said the waragi was impounded at night around the police checkpoint in Pian Upe game reserve.
“They had poured the waragi into the big drums claiming it was fuel for road construction but the smell of the waragi could not hide,” she said.
She added that they also arrested five people who were transporting the deadly crude waragi to be sold in Amudat and Nakapiripirit.
Ms. Temaya said the five suspects will be charged with dealing in and illegal possession of crude warragi.
She vowed that they will continue to lay roadblocks to impound the crude waragi which has fueled domestic violence in Nakapiripirit district.
Mr. Aloysius Aloka the Chief Administrative Officer Nakapiripirit attributes the high rate of domestic violence and crime to over drinking.
He explained that most parents have abandoned their families and resorted to drinking.
He also blames the poor performance in school to the parents’ failure to provide scholastic material for their children in favour of drinking.
Mr. Aloka encouraged Police to continue mounting roadblocks to impound the illicit brew.
He said they are burying people every week who are dying after consuming this illicit waragi adding that as a district they will not sit back and watch people dying as a result of sipping the illicit brew.
Mr. David Modo the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Nakapiripirit said the consumption of waragi in Nakapiripirit was posing a security threat in the district.
“This waragi has rendered people unproductive, many youth have been deformed by this waragi,” he said.
