Kidnapped Ugandans escaped unhurt

KANUNGU – Kigezi regional police has finally discovered two kidnap victims who were reportedly kidnapped on Tuesday, August 20.

The duo was Twinomujuni Eldard and Ambrose Twinamatsiko who were allegedly kidnapped on Tuesday night. Both of them are residents of Butogota township in Kanungu district.

The two victims escaped from the kidnappers in different directions from on Tuesday at 7 am were rescued by police.

Mr. Ambrose Twinamatsiko was discovered at Kyeshero border and Mr. Twinomjuni at Kyabuyorwa short cut to DRC.

“We were taken a hostage to DRC but we could not identify any of the kidnappers because they were putting on masks,” one of the victims narrated.

The Kigezi regional police spokesperson, Elly Maate noted that police discovered the victims in different locations where they claim to have escaped from the kidnappers.

Mr. Maate said that “police together with border authorities are in talks with their counterparts in DRC to ensure that the vice is completely dealt with”.

Inquiries into the matter are still ongoing to arrest the kidnappers and take legal action against them. A police file has been opened; vide Kanungu CRB 506/2019.

Rampant cases of kidnaps by suspected Congolese gunmen have left Kanungu residents in fear.

During his recent Kigezi tour, President Yoweri Museveni told residents neighbouring the Uganda-DRC border that the governments of both countries had successfully cracked down on criminals involved in kidnaps.
